Post Office Employees Credit Union

The nation's economic downturn is making itself felt at City Hall in unexpectedly painful ways.

It's bad enough that the city's tax collections are down, one of several factors that could lead to sharp cuts in many departments' budgets next year.

Perhaps even worse, in some employees' view, is that GTE Federal Credit Union, to which thousands of city workers belong, has announced that it will permanently close its branch office in City Hall next week. The credit union cited "current economic conditions" as the reason for the cutback.

Starting Wednesday, city workers who want more than online access to their accounts will have to trudge a few blocks to the main post office at 701 Loyola Ave., where they can visit the Post Office Employees Credit Union branch.
